January 26th - AUSTRALIA DAY

Next week we will work at class some cultural aspects about the Australia Day.It is on 26^th January and commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson,now part of Sidney, in 1788.

AUSTRALIA DAY’S SYMBOLS

Australia Day’s symbols are : the national flag and the national anthem “Advance Australia Fair”.

Other symbols are : the Golden Wattle, the opal and the national colours of green and gold.

WHAT DO PEOPLE DO

Many people have a day off work and go on a picnic in a park, go shopping, play sports or watch sports events.

In some towns and cities, citizenship ceremonies are held, ceremonies to welcome immigrants who have been granted Australian citizenship.
